Columbus Iselin studied under the marine biologist, Henry Bigelow, who brought him to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in 1930. As a physical oceanographer, he supervised the Atlantis in her exploration of the Gulf Stream. In 1940 he was appointed Director of WHOI. He served until 1950, then again, briefly from 1956-1958. Meteorologist Joanne (Gerould) Simpson was born near Boston, Mass., on March 23, 1923, the elder of two children of Russell and Virginia Gerould.
